The Cover Versions [2017 Edition]

Welcome to Late Night Tales’ The Cover Versions. Over the years, we like to think we’ve whittled away at the margins of mediocrity with our venerable series of mixes. In doing so, we have built a stellar catalogue of cover versions, with which to entertain, bedazzle and enrich your lives. The cover version was a term first used in the United States in 1952, to denote a new rendition of an already existing song. Prior to the development of more sophisticated recording techniques, the music industry based its chart placings on sheet music sales rather than recordings. In fact, during the ’50s many of the cover versions were often regarded as acts of sabotage by one label on another, with the readings often anodyne white versions of black rock’n’roll songs. It wasn’t until the early 1960s, when songs were covered as a mark of respect (and often adulation) by groups like the Rolling Stones and Beatles that the cover took on a veneer of respect. 

Far from constraining our intrepid mixers, the cover version frees them from their daily toils something that is evident in their choices. You can hear it in the breeze as the sea laps up towards the headphones of your mind. The cover girls. The cover boys. Here now.
